A map of the Sealed Section.

The Sealed Section, or Walled Section,[1] was a portion of Old Quarter which was sealed around fifty years before the events of the The Dark Project, due to a disastrous event which involved the revival of the dead en masse, better known as the Catastrophe. Many people died, or got injured, during the incident and an emergency wall was build around the section to contain the outbreak and the area was subsequently abandoned.[2][3]

The Historic City[]

As the Sealed Section had been deserted for around fifty years before the events of The Dark Project it gave a good impression of what The City had been like in the near past. In general, technology was still important and widely used, though to a somewhat lesser extent. The street lights were controlled by power grid control boxes, situated in such a manner that all the streets could be properly lighted and controlled. There was also a sewage system, a drawbridge that was controlled by buttons, and The City Council had appointed a Department of Public Works to take care of sewage and electricity.[4] The City was ruled by a Baron at that time as well.[5]

The factions that were present in this area were the Order of the Hammer and (secretly) the Keepers.[6] Crime was not as organized back then, but professional thieves were available for hire.[7]

The Incident[]

TG B07 02

Raging zombie hordes.

I've heard stories of the incident; most are wild rumors about hordes of zombies and raging fires. Now that part of the city is walled off, no one's allowed to go in. Not that many people would dare to in the first place...
  — Garrett, about The Cataclysm[2]

The reason for the abandonment of the areas behind The Barricades was a catastrophe that was dated around fifty years before The Dark Project. The old tales described it as hordes of Zombies and raging fires. The origin of the Undead scourge is unknown, but it is known that it originated from the Old Hammer Cathedral. In the letter to Keeper Lukas from Keeper Andrus, it is implied that the Trickster may have had something to do with the cataclysm but the intro text of "Return To The Cathedral" suggest it may also have been caused because the Hammers have tried to use The Eye for themselves.[8][9] The Hammers were unable to handle the plague and fell down only to rise up as Undead themselves.[10]

Elementalwards

The Elemental Wards.

The Keepers were the ones that found a solution and saved The City from peril. They used the Elemental Wards to seal the doors of the cathedral and stop the ever-coming waves of Undead. These wards were locked with four talismans which were then hidden in different locations by the Keepers.[6][11] The main cause of the Undead was stopped, but there were still raging zombies outside on the streets. Because of this, the City Council decided to build a large wall around the current section to protect the people from the evils within. The City Watch was assigned the task of fighting the Undead and The council member Lord Whitsimmon was put in charge of supervising the building process. Though there were workers lost to the Undead, the wall was finished and the catastrophe was kept at bay.[3]

Current State[]

Structures[]

The Sealed Section was still relatively intact when Garrett visited. Some buildings had collapsed, were burned down or had been gutted, but the municipal power (even lamp posts that had been knocked over), sewage and machinery were still operational. Everything else was worn down, however. Moss covered the buildings and leaves cover the street. Some of the stone or cobblestone streets had given way to dirt. All of the wood was succumbing to rot. The secret Keeper library was virtually untouched, and the traps inside are set and still fully functional.

Inhabitants[]

As the section had been abandoned for fifty years many creatures have found their way in the withering buildings and ruins besides the current Undead creatures. Craymans and Burricks have been tunneling and living in the sewer system and Green Spiders can be found in some places. Zombies and Apparitions patrol the streets and some houses even contained Haunts and (in Thief Gold only) Fire Shadows.

As all Undead creatures have a hatred for all living beings there are clashes between the two and in some streets zombies can be seen engaging with burricks.

Geography[]

Public Works Stations[]

There are several maintenance station of the Department of Public Works situated at various neighborhoods of the Sealed Section. They were used to control the local light grid and are still operational even though they have been left abandoned for 50 years. The known stations are stationed at Cathedral Street, De Perrin Street, Market Street and Rubin Street. There also was a power grid control box build in a residence situated at southern Rubin Street and the Department of Public Works was thinking about building a new station in that area.

Officially, all the stations should be marked on the map with a gear icon but the department had not been vigilant enough about this.[4]

Cathedral Street[]

Barber[]

Cathedral Street Barber

The local barber situated at Cathedral Street.

Drawbridge[]

Cathedral Street Drawbridge

A drawbridge that was built to cross the canal running through the sealed section, situated at Cathedral Street. Before the incident, it seemed to be one of the arteries connecting Old Quarter with what is known today as the Sealed Section.

Keeper's Grotto[]

Keeper's Chapel 001

The Keeper Grotto was the outer facade of the secret Keeper Library in the Sealed Section, at the Cathedral Street. The Grotto contained a Keeper statue, surrounded by unlit torches, a large ring of water with, at the center, a stone pillar with on top of it a metal structure in the shape of a keyhole.

Stable[]

Cathedral Street Stable

This stable is situated at Cathedral Street close to the drawbridge. It is likely that the stable was used by merchants on their way through Old Quarter and it is an additional evidence for the former importance of Cathedral Street.

De Perrin Street[]

Mechanist[]

The Machinist shop at the De Perrin Street near the river that runs through the section. Like with the other known Machinist Shops in the Sealed Section, the shop is marked by a sing featuring gears.

Thief's House[]

An unknown thief's house was situated at the De Perrin Street and contained things like a Flash Bomb, an Explosive Mine, a Noisemaker Arrow and was even guarded by a live mine.

Psychic[]

The shop of a local psychic situated at the De Perrin Street.

Market Street[]

Food Shops[]

There were several food shops at Market Street such as a baker, a butcher, a dairy shop and a greengrocer.

The Market Street Armoury was a local weapons repository situated at Market Street. When Garrett visited this area, the armoury was entirely inaccessible.

Map[]

During the time of The Dark Project, maps of the sealed section were still easy to come by, but most of them were not very detailed. The map at the top of this page is the one Garrett used when he traveled trough the sealed section in search of the Old Hammer Cathedral.[2]

Artifacts[]

TG B11 02

The Eye, floating inside the Old Hammer Cathedral, possibly played a role in the Catastrophe.

As the sealed section was hastily abandoned, many treasures and some important artifacts were left to sit in the sealed section. known artifacts were:
