The Compass is the helper device that lets the player know Garrett's current angle in relation to the cardinal directions, North / East / South / West. It is present in all Thief games, and is visible on the right (T1/T2) or center (TDS) of the Heads Up Display.
In Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age it takes the first inventory slot, and displays some of the properties of an attitude indicator, or artificial horizon, in addition to showing directions. Curiously enough, the red arrow points to the north.
In Thief: Deadly Shadows, however, the compass is fused with the Light Gem with no additional capabilities. In place of the colored arrows denoting the cardinal directions, metal letters have been attached.
