Cragscleft[2][3] or Cragscleft Prison was a multifunctional Hammerite complex, carved out of a quarry, situated in the mountains outside of The City. It consisted of four distinct areas, namely a mining complex, a factory, a prison, and barracks.

Areas[]

Mines[]

The mines occupied the lowest section of Cragscleft. They were partially flooded, and were infested by the undead, primarily zombies and one unusual bone creature, and insects like the Green Spider and Insect Swarms. As such, the Hammerites did not work the lowest levels.

There also was a ruined chapel on the highest level of the mines that was known to contain a Holy Water Font and on Normal mission mode there was a small room containing a Holy Water Font on the second level.[4]

Factory[]

The factory was situated just above the top mine level and was presumably safe from any undead lurking below. It was used for various types of Hammer craftsmanship, but mainly for casting hammers in large machines. Convicts from the prison were sometimes sentenced to factory work here.[5]

Prison[]

The prison was the most well-known and infamous part of the Cragscleft complex. It was located above the factory area, and was divided into four cell blocks. The prison was used to contain people who were caught breaking the self-imposed Hammer tenets.[6] The order determined who was a criminal through its own judgment, separately from the City Watch.[3]

Based on a letter between Ramirez and Commissioner deNavan, it seems likely that the City Watch sent their prisoners to Cragscleft.[7]

Barracks

Barracks[]

The Barracks occupied the top level of the complex, and contained the administrative offices and the chapel, as well as dining and other sections. Evidence and other valuable items collected from prisoners were stored here.

Security[]

As can be expected from a Hammerite facility security was high but was lacking in certain areas. The Hammers constantly guarded passageways between areas and overlooked prison areas in guard stations while also patrolling the factory and prison area. Most notable was the advanced alarm system that could also be activated by security cameras. The biggest security issue was light as some crucial areas had dark spaces where a skilled thief could move without being detected. Garrett noted that getting inside the complex through the main gate was difficult but there was also another way through the mines at the surface of the hill but this came with its own problems.[6]

Aftermath[]

It appears that after Garrett's visit, Cragcleft was closed down. Reasons seam to cite the decreasing numbers of Hammerites, foreshadowing the rise of the Mechanists in The Metal Age.[8]

Notes[]

Trivia[]

  • Switching the electric switch in the control room activates a machine in the machine rooms.
