Too many Categories???[]

Here is the current Category list.

These pages/categories have been marked for deletion:

  • Explosive Weapons
  • Items Weapons Tool
  • Location

We should not need to redirect categories. Categories can be sub categories of others. Like Category:FM_Year

There is a small problem with pages that are only linked to by their category, they show up in the Orphaned pages, so using categories as main pages doesn't help in finding orphaned pages.

Any ideas on how to better organize this???Sxerks 21:47, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm not at all certain, really, but maybe it'd be helpful to see a graphic of the category trees? Wonder if there already exists a tool for generating a chart. I imagine this must come up a lot in the different wikias.
Oh, and what about the [[Trivia]] page versus the Category:Trivia BTW? I mean, it's pretty high profile in the left main wikia menu.

See TREE and figure out what should be where.

The Category list lists them all.

So from the list above and the category list which ones do we NEED.

And the Trivia item on the sidebar is just there because it on the front page, just make a Talk page for MediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar if you want something else on there.

Here are ones I don't think are needed:

There are probably more. Sxerks 19:22, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Older Discussion[]

I think our wiki could use another categorie. I'm planing to do articles dealing with the Cetus Amicus and the Mechanist's drilling machine (both from "Precious Cargo").

Now the "problem": these articles won't either fit into Items Weapons Tools nor to Location and so on.

My suggestion would be to create a new categorie, called "Technology" or "Technologies" or something similar to it.

So what do you think about it? Thehoosh 18:25, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, let's work on that. Unfortunately, these things are merely called "Equipment" which doesn't sound exciting at all. Ehcmier 22:48, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Ehcmier

Maybe some inspiration on the categories from another "wiki" I've been working on quite a long time: starwarsunion.de: Lexica. I know it's german but you'll probably see the point. There we have the following categories: characters, creatures, institutions, events, battles, planets, locations, races, nature / plants, technology, weapons, vehicles and my favorite one: spacecrafts. My suggestion would be to add at least the Technology categorie because I wouldn't call a submarine or a huge steam boiler equipment.Thehoosh 23:47, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Absolutely. What's tricky about a word like Technology, is that a sword and other weaponry is a type of it and made with it, transportation is a type of it and made with it, etc. Equipment is actually a sub-category of Technology, too. Since steampunk is a major drving technology, and many things in the Thief universe exist because of steampunk technology, I wonder if we could make Steampunk, as well as Precursor technologies, into sub-categories. Voicing my agreement on the need for a new category. I'm hesitant to immediately call it "technology", though, because we have quite a few instances of doodads and queer concepts which aren't necessarily best filed under the label "technology". Cf. the collector towers and the magic lamps in the Mage Towers, etc. Sub-categories are always an option, of course. But I agree that there should be a category encompassing the articles on Blackmoore's sound studio, the termotech equipment, the unbelievably sturdy casting technique for hammers, the spiky stations, and the Builder's Children. An alternative title for this category might be "[[:Category:Machinery]]", but I'm afraid it carries the same problems. Or we could just call'em "[[:Category:Whojamaflips]] Larris 00:44, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

I think you all are thinking too hard with this. I know a sword is technology, but that made by hammmer anvil forge and fire is used ingame as a tool or weapon. Seeing that we cant operate a metal beast or a drill, i feel that [[:Category:technology]] is nessessary. Just put things in this category like i said, not used by garrett. On this starwars wiki we were facing the same problem. An example: we wanted to create articles dealing with blaster / laser guns. For some people these were weapons, for others technology. Our solution was simple: we created a basic article, describing the function of a laser gun and put it into "technology". All the other articles, like stormtrooper rifle were put into "weapons" and linked to the "laser gun" article. This had another advantage too: you keep the wiki clean of repetitions because you don't have to explain the function in each article again. For our wiki it could be like this:

arrow, categorie: technology
A arrow is a projectile that can be shoot using a bow or crossbow. It is the best choice for ranged combat and can be equiped with different charges.

water arrow, categorie: weapon
