Break into a guarded mansion, steal another fat nobleman's priceless trinket, and leave quietly.

Lord Bafford's Manor is the second mission of Thief: The Dark Project and Thief Gold, and the first real mission after the training mission. It is set in and around Lord Bafford's Manor.

Some time after leaving the Keepers, Garrett takes a simple job: "Break into a guarded mansion, steal another fat nobleman's priceless trinket and leave quietly" (just how long it has been since Garrett's training is never stated, but the kind of job he is willing to attempt and the connections he has made suggest he has established himself in the meantime). Garrett's task, given by his fence Cutty, is to steal a valuable scepter from a large manor while the master is away.

The mission comprises the entire manor (three floors plus vaults and cellar) with some surrounding streets. The player begins the mission near the guarded front gate of the house. Note that on Normal difficulty it is only necessary to pick up the scepter to complete the mission. On higher difficulties the player must also exit the building.

ObjectivesEdit

  • Sneak into Lord Bafford's manor and case the place. The well house in back is your best bet, if you can get the key from the guard - blackjacking or pickpocketing him would be quietest.
  • Find Lord Bafford's prized jeweled scepter, and redistribute it... to yourself. Try to do it without causing too much commotion.
  • In addition to pinching the scepter, steal 350 worth of valuables while you're in the manor. (Hard)
  • Don't kill any of the servants; they're harmless. (Hard)
  • In addition to pinching the scepter, steal 700 worth of valuables while you're in the manor. (Expert)
  • Don't kill anyone while you do the job. No servants, no guards, no pets... no one. (Expert)
  • Once you've achieved your other objectives, get out of the manor house and back to the city streets. (Hard/Expert)

Difficulty AlterationsEdit

There are no changes in the level's structure throughout the different difficulty settings. In general the second floor of the Bafford mansion, becomes more crowded with guards on Hard and Expert. Those who play on Normal will benefit from an extra throne room key in Bafford's bedroom, which makes its acquisition easier.

Some TipsEdit

  • Do not try to break inside the mansion through the front gate. The Bafford Front Gate Guards are tougher than the other guards inside the mansion, one of them is an archer and the gate needs some time to rise up. Take the normal long route through the well house and the sewers.
  • Even if you get caught inside the mansion don't alarm yourself. Bafford's Guards are slow and you can easily hide away from them. Just make sure none of the Sergeants around the throne room area spot you.
  • Prepare your escape through the North sideway gate early. When you pass near it, raise it so that you won't need to wait for that when you exit the mansion with the scepter.
  • The secret passage from the rooftop gardens to the throne room offers a more sneaky way to the scepter and a better position against the throne room guard, but be careful not to slip from the wooden beams.
